Rotary Youth Leadership Awards

RYLA

What is RYLA?

RYLA is a multi-day camp designed to help young people build character, leadership and good citizenship. Young people who have demonstrated leadership and community service are awarded the opportunity to attend a RYLA camp. Participants are selected and sponsored by a participating Rotary club, which cover all expenses.

RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth, and aims to:

● Demonstrate Rotary’s respect and concern for youth.
● Provide an effective training experience for selected youth leaders.
● Encourage leadership of youth by youth.
● Publicly recognize young people who are rendering service to their communities.

There are three RYLA camps offered through Rotary International District 5040:

Lakelse (Grades 8-10)
South (Grades 10-12)
North (Ages 19-30)

What do RYLA participants learn?

Participants take part in a variety of activities including group workshops, team-building exercises and debrief sessions facilitated by RYLA staff. Speakers in business, government and education are invited to share their personal journeys and inspire future leaders. In addition, participants take part in outdoor and social activities which could include Dragon Boating, kayaking, team skits, a variety show and random dance parties!

RYLA’s core curriculum includes:

● Fundamentals of leadership.
● Leadership ethics and the four-way test.
● Importance of communication skills in effective leadership.
● Conflict management and problem solving.
● Building self-confidence and self-esteem.
● Elements of community and global citizenship.
● Rotary’s purpose of service to the community and world.

RYLA brings together a diverse fellowship of emerging youth leaders from across the province. RYLA gives like-minded youth the opportunity to discuss important ethical and social issues facing their generation. Participants leave RYLA with the tools and motivation needed to make a difference in their local and global communities. Most “RYLArians” agree, RYLA is a life-changing experience. Don’t miss out on this opportunity!

Rotary International District 5040 is located on Canada’s West Coast in British Columbia. There are currently 50 Rotary clubs and over 1,700 Rotarians in our district.

Rotary clubs bring together citizens who are dedicated to serving others and building relationships in their own communities and beyond.

Value of RYLA for Rotary Clubs

RYLA not only benefits the participants, but also Rotary club members known as “Rotarians”. RYLA helps Rotarians connect with promising young leaders in their community. Rotarians serve as mentors for participants on the path to becoming community and professional leaders. In turn, RYLA can bring new energy to a Rotary club or district, inspire innovative ideas for service, increase support of community service projects and develop future Rotarians.

Benefits of RYLA sponsorship:

● enables every Rotary club to acknowledge leadership and service to the community of two or more young people annually.
● enthuses young leaders and provides them with valuable leadership techniques.
● exposes a large number of young people, their families and their peer groups, to Rotary ideals of service.
● is a complementary program to other Rotary youth activities such as Interact and Youth Exchange and has been instrumental in the formation of Rotaract clubs.
